We debuted our first CSA this month, featuring dahlias. It has gone marvelously! Pick-up is from the farm at our flower barn shop every other Thursday, which also opened its doors to the public for the first time this month. The dahlias, posing ever so nonchalantly at top, are simply glowing and growing copiously enough to be featured in our September arranging workshop.
Pictured below is a taste of muscadines from our small vineyard, grown naturally and with love. Do you love muscadines? Muscadine wine? Muscadine jam? They are a delightful native grapevine from Florida all the way up to New Jersey, and all the way over to eastern Texas and Oklahoma. This hard-working fruit has been cultivated since the 1500s, ensuring various delicious recipes and good times along the way. Our muscadine harvest was this week and we took no time getting to making jam. A friend is enjoying the harvest for wine-making. Good times, indeed.
Oh, and another big move happened this month for us - the great hellebore migration. We recently cleared an area among tulip poplars and oaks to make a new home for hellebores, Solomon’s seal, and foxglove. It was time to divide the original hellebore site and I think they will bloom better. With dappled shade, the woods will be a lovely place for them to settle. Alina the Amazing, valued crew member here at Hawk and Sparrow Flowers, did all of the planting. She reminded me of me - she finished digging the hole with her hands (the soil is very loose) and planted them with enthusiasm.
Three big, new goals being realized in the same month has been really energizing. Add to that cooler days with fresh breezes and you have a recipe for replenishing the spirit. It’s also been really, really great getting to know our patrons a little more.
Cheers to you and yours,
Lis & Tim
