Since January, Tim & I have been patiently seeing a vital farm project to fruition…installing a new agricultural well. Yesterday, a crew arrived to trench for the electrical to be laid. Another step! A second well is vital if the first has a problem or needs servicing and is out of order…no more understood than in our current early and intense heat wave. If we had to wait on a pump or other part for our first well, without a backup the farm could lose a whole crop or season, affecting other local businesses, and our ability to provide you fresh, clean, farm-grown arrangements. Thank goodness for the rain this week and for trenchers.
Harvesting, sowing, planting, and pulling keep us constantly on the go here at Hawk & Sparrow Flowers. Mornings usually start around 5am. When that is done, there’s hanging plants to dry (more next week on dried specialties), arranging, preparing for market, and photographing. All in a day’s work.
Aside from heat and digging, June is also the month for mint. Ahhh, mint. So cool. Just the sound of it. Being a steady source of flowers and foliage, we recently enjoyed a minty harvest (pictured above) for one Charlotte florist to stock their shelves. Mint is a favorite to add in summer arrangements and brings a refreshing quality to any bouquet, and the farm. We love it.
Here’s to staying cool and well watered,
Lis & Tim
